This is JW talk not ex-JW talk. The world will not be ending, just each of our lives, so don't waste them on pointless speculation. Newton was a genius at physics but not religion.

Who will be resurrected? The righteous and the unrighteous
by RULES & REGULATIONS inchapter seven.
there will be a resurrection.
17 who will be resurrected?

Has anyone ever been resurrected? Is it reasonable to resurrect people? Millions of them?
It is totally absurd and beyond imagination.
It is easy to put in writing and induce people to conform to a cult by promising resurrections (but you have to be gullible first). It is against reason to resurrect someone, against historical facts, against biology and evolutionary experience, and also beyond anyone's ability to perform the miracle.
No single person has ever been resurrected. . . except in myth and magic fairy tales.

Just peeking in for a bit...
by Jidders ini rather apprehensively would like to say hello.. i've been raised somewhat in the truth, one of my parents is rather rather strong in the beliefs but could honestly be considered pomi with how active they are and their side of the family comes from a line of witnesses, the other parent was but faded a long time ago.
as such i was taught quite a bit of jw teachings between family and off and on again bible studies.
recently i had a serious emotional break down over a few months after said pomi parent had advised me that they would not attend my wedding should that day come (i also had recieved a text from my bible teacher i hadnt heard from in a year or two giving a scripture) and it sorta all sank on me that my activity over the last few years was not really jw material.

Jidders welcome to the site. Factual things should not make anyone feel weary!
Try and distinguish between what is a belief and what is factual. JW teachings are mere beliefs.
Beliefs are unprovable things such as Armageddon, the kingdom of God, angels etc. They use these ideas to manipulate their flock. Be prepared to have your own say and not fear religious warnings.
Prophecy is quite useless, remember Jesus got it completely wrong when he said that the kingdom of God would come in glory in his day and be witnessed by some of his listeners. Mark 9;1.
Discover who you are and what you can do--this is far more important than learning about fearful beliefs from a crank religion.

If it was compulsory to join a religion I would have to make up my own.
Religion ultimately depends on three primary things: ignorance, faith and reward. What useful thing can you do with mainly irrational ingredients?
There is no merit in denying scientifically determined facts but you have to do so if your purpose is to be a "believer". Faith is involved because the beliefs are based on the words of invisible creatures who are spelling out the holy imperatives. Religion only works if the believer is promised a reward otherwise why put yourself through foolish hoops if there is no benefit at the end?
Now my cat has been seen by neighbours leaping six feet off the ground and catching pigeons in mid-air which he drags home alive through the cat flap and devours in the kitchen shedding sacrificial blood with feathers all over the place. He is ignorant of human things although it has to be said he is highly informed and expert in rodent and bird demolition. Despite snacking all day long on these creatures he still has faith in the reward of me feeding him, so in the absence of anything better I will have to go for the Cat Feeding Religion. Like the irrationality found in all "True Religions" it is mad that I feed my cat when he is perfectly capable of looking after himself.

Pity about Armageddon not coming, oh dear, JWs might start looking elsewhere. GB response: feed their persecution complex instead, this will keep their minds off our past mistakes.
It will involve making the lowly JW feel important for the first time-- as an object of the authorities attention, giving them an elevated status. "It's us against everyone else and we have True Religion".
Truly this is a case of organised paranoia managed by the governing body of Jehovah's Witnesses which wastes people's lives and never gives them anything useful-- only lifelong delusions.

I am a proud Jehovah's Witness Defender
by Matthew Jefferson inmy name is matthew j and i have just ended my study with the jehovah's witnesses.
no, i did not stop studying because i believe the jehovah's witnesses are a 'cult', i left due to the minor beliefs that i hold that remain separate from the organization.
i called my elder who is still an amazing man and great counselor, affirming that i do not wish to continue my studying.

Well done for not joining Matthew!
After a while I think that you will begin to realise what a good decision you have made after a bit more information has come your way, the other side of the coin as it were.
Nearly everyone on this site has woken up to the delusional nature of being a Jehovah's Witness.
Let me give you a clue, the JWs are normally humble and decent people just like you are, not so the leaders. Never in one hundred and forty years of propaganda have they got anything right other than what could be found elsewhere in other religious literature. All of their predictions have fallen completely flat and have been passed off and over without apology!
They misled millions of believers who gave up their independence, livelihood, money and time, they proudly wasted the whole of their lives for the beliefs of the Watchtower-- and died disappointed. For about seventy odd years they taught with absolute certainty that Armageddon would come within the generation which lived through the year 1914.
Does this give you any insight as to how they operate? i.e permanently moving the goal posts forward in time and treating the faithful as workhorses.
I hope that you also can come to see that Armageddon and paradise are also fictions like much of the Bible.

How to peddle Doomsday for Fun and Profit
by TerryWalstrom injames ussher (1581-1656).
your name is ussher – james ussher – and you are the archbishop of all of ireland.. you are living in the 1600s and are obsessive-compulsive when it comes to speculative ideas.
you are convinced that you alone have the intellect to figure exact dates of all the major events in the bible actually.

Freddie "fried brain" Franz, the man who had the will and authority to say what he liked, and called his beliefs a certainty because "God cannot lie"-- and no one was allowed to contradict him.
A perfect cult scenario!

I like it Snugs: a pageant. Pageants have no need to be anything connected with reality and of course JW dramas have no connection. Its just to put the wind up cult believers to try and keep them loyal to the leadership.
But really! "Your Deliverance is at Hand" blah blah. Who on earth needs being delivered? What a fantastical fantasy? It is so far removed from normal sane life, it is the sort of talk by desperate people forced to live in a cocoon suspended over an active volcano.
I for one want it to be known that I do not wished to be delivered, thank you very much, now or at any time. You can stuff your Biblical deliverance.

Love you article Terry. How many JWs today know the history of their cult and how arch-fantasist Freddie Franz led the whole Watchtower cavalcade through the twentieth century? The JW cult has indeed always been led by fixated believers (perhaps with the exception of the more pragmatic business man Knorr). Religious fixations used to be its strength and remains so at present but they have had their time in the sun, only now the twilight gloom beckons.
I think we should give Ussher a bit of credit! Early in the seventeenth century it was an original idea to use available information and arrive at a date for the start of the world as we know it. Albeit hopelessly wrong it was the first stab at understanding the time scale of life and the planet. Geologists and Victorian antiquaries paved the way nearly two hundred years later. From the evidence of their findings they recognised that the Bible was simply wrong on the matter of dating. It is only now, a further two centuries on, that we have a good handle on the dating of our planet and the timing of origins of the things on it. You have to start somewhere and Ussher for all his faults was that beginning.
